Thermal Reconditioning vs. Keratin Treatment
There are so many hair treatment options out there, it can be overwhelming to decide which one is best for your locks. If you want to straighten your hair, two of the most common options are keratin and thermal reconditioning.
But which is better? Should you go with Japanese hair straightening or another method? Are there benefits to each method? Here is what you need to know about each option before you head to the hair salon. Ask yourself the following questions to determine which option is best for you.
Do I want a long-lasting treatment or something temporary?
Thermal reconditioning, also referred to as Japanese hair straightening, permanently straightens your hair. If you choose this option, you will only need to touch up your hair every six to 12 months.
If you prefer something that will straighten your hair until it grows out, keratin treatments are better. These protein treatments, also known as Brazilian blowouts, smooth your hair for two to four months. Then, the natural texture returns to your hair.
Do I care which products are used on my hair?
Different products are used for keratin and thermal reconditioning. For Japanese hair straightening, the stylist will use products that contain chemicals that break the shape-forming bonds in the hair so it stays straight. Keratin protein treatments use keratin protein to straighten your hair. Some keratin treatments may also contain formaldehyde.
What is my hair type?
Loose, bulky curls typically respond best to thermal reconditioning. If you have tighter, smaller curls, wavy hair, color-treated hair or damaged hair, you may get better results from keratin treatment.
How much time do I have to devote to keratin and thermal reconditioning?
The process of thermal reconditioning can take up to eight hours. Future touch-ups will take three to four hours. With keratin treatments, the stylist will apply the product, blow-dry your hair straight and flat iron it. The keratin treatment solution stays in your hair for three or four days, then you can wash your hair to rinse it out.
Have I consulted with a professional?
Before you decide on keratin and thermal reconditioning solutions, you should always consult with a professional stylist. This expert will determine if your hair is healthy enough and will benefit from either of these procedures.
Is Japanese hair straightening available near me?
Contact your local salon to determine what methods are available in your area. Confirm which specialties are offered and what techniques would be recommended for your hair type and style goals. Look for professionals with a track record of success in the industry, who can point to satisfied clients for references.
