Summertime means hot and humid weather in our neck of the woods. While it’s often preferable to frigid winter temperatures, all of this humidity can lead to bad hair days. The good news is that we’re here to help!

Keep reading to pick up some tips on how to maintain hair in humid weather:

  • Moisturize: Moisturizing your hair is one of the top ways to prevent a bad hair day caused by humidity. This is because well-moisturized hair doesn’t absorb water from the air, which causes limp or frizzy hair. Look for moisturizing shampoos and conditioners to lock moisture in while keeping excess moisture out of your locks.
  • Rinse with cold water: Our hair’s cuticles open and close depending on the amount of heat added to it. Hot cuticles open up, which makes them absorb moisture and get frizzy or limp. Rinse your hair with cold water right before you get out of the shower to keep the cuticles closed and prevent your hair from absorbing more moisture.
  • Be careful when drying: Hot air from your blow dryer will also cause those cuticles to open back up. Instead of blow drying all of your hair, one of our hair care tips for a humid climate is to only dry the tips. We also don’t recommend roughing your hair up when you get out of the shower. Instead, let your hair air dry, and gently dab it with a towel to keep it voluminous.
  • Use silicone-based products: A silicone-based balm, pomade or hair oil will coat your hair and seal out any humidity. Silicone products are perfect for coarse or curly hair, but they can make finer hair types feel heavy. Keep in mind that less is more—don’t use too much of your silicone product.
  • Try a leave-in conditioner: Applying cream or spray leave-in conditioners can do wonders to prevent that dreaded frizz. Use your product at least once a week to restore any lost moisture. Look for conditioners with anti-humectant properties—these are designed to prevent hair from drawing moisture out of the air.
  • Grow your hair out: Believe it or not, it’s easier to maintain hair in humid weather if your hair is longer. Short hair is more likely to lose form and get puffy due to humidity. Having longer hair also gives you more options and control when styling it.
  • Consider wearing your hair up: If you’ve tried everything above and your hair still isn’t cooperating in this humidity, just leave it up. Putting your hair in a loose ponytail or a bun won’t eliminate frizz, but it won’t be as noticeable. Plus, keeping your hair off your shoulders and face during the summer will make you feel much cooler on those hot afternoons.
